Special Needs, Inclusive Education and Differentiated Teaching

This course focuses on inclusive education, differentiated teaching and the support of students with disabilities or special educational needs. Participants explore practical strategies that help students participate more actively in school and social life, with emphasis on recognising individual strengths, adapting teaching and using visual and alternative communication material.

The course includes an introductory familiarisation with visual and multimodal communication methods and tools, such as PECS and Makaton, without constituting an official certification programme in these specific methods.

Volos and Pelion. Depending on the Association's planning and the course calendar of each period, the course may also take place in other regions of Greece, such as Crete.

Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance from European Pathfinders upon completion of the course. Where applicable, Europass Mobility documentation may be supported in cooperation with the sending organisation and according to the requirements of the mobility.

This course is suitable for preschool, primary and secondary school teachers, special needs teachers, adult educators, teaching assistants, school managers, vocational education professionals, student teachers and professionals working with persons with disabilities or special educational needs.

The aim of the course is to strengthen educators' ability to design more accessible, flexible and inclusive learning experiences. The course helps participants identify students' individual strengths, adapt activities and use visual and alternative communication tools in ways that support participation, confidence and social inclusion.

Participants are introduced to key principles of inclusive education and differentiated teaching. The course includes practical work on the creation of visual educational material, examples of activity adaptation, communication support techniques and strategies for supporting students with different needs, abilities and ways of expression.

Special emphasis is placed on connecting inclusion with everyday school life, social participation, personal autonomy and the development of a positive self-image for students.

The course is practical and experiential. It combines short input sessions, group workshops, material creation activities, case-based learning, practical exercises and reflection. Learning is connected to real educational situations and to the needs participants face in their own educational settings.

• Introduction to the principles of inclusive education and differentiated teaching.
• Exploring national and international policies on special and inclusive education.
• Understanding the diverse learning needs of students, including learners with disabilities, learning difficulties, giftedness, and multicultural backgrounds.
• Workshops on differentiated instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and personalised learning.
• Practical strategies for adapting curriculum, teaching methods, classroom activities, and assessments.
• Case studies and collaborative problem-solving based on real classroom scenarios.
• Simulation activities to develop empathy and awareness of barriers faced by learners with special educational needs.
• Hands-on workshops on assistive technologies and digital tools that support inclusive learning.
• Developing Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) and differentiated lesson plans.
• Classroom management techniques for creating positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environments.
• Peer collaboration, lesson design, and micro-teaching sessions with constructive feedback.
• Study visits to inclusive schools, special education settings, or educational support centres to observe effective inclusive practices.
• Reflection sessions and exchange of good practices among participants.
• Development of an individual action plan for implementing inclusive and differentiated teaching strategies in participants' own educational contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• design small-scale inclusion interventions for their school or organisation.
